Dance the night away with “Night Train"

Welcome back everyone and welcome to a new an exciting year for the NCABA.

The first meting of the Alliance was held January 23rd with over 20 members attending.

The 2008 committees gave their reports and it looks like we have a busy year ahead….Members-to-Members Expo in May, Career Fair in June, Scholarship Award in Spring, Educational Seminars being planned, networking with government agencies and tourism and a grand finale, “The Health and Wealth Gala” being planned for October. This is only to mention what is on the list….so far. As you know, we have always been committed to meeting the needs of the community as they arise, so we are expecting more and more events to be put on the calendar throughout the year.

In order to secure some working capital, the executive committee presented the need for a fundraiser to supply a little working money to pull some of these events off with less burden on our members.

On Saturday, March 15th a dance will be held, sponsored by the NCABA, at the Hope Fire Hall in Northern Cambria.

“Night Train” will be providing music from 9:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Donation for the dance is $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. Refreshments are free and you may BYOB. Please keep in mind that this is an over 21 dance.

Hey everyone, this will probably be the big “St. Patty’s Day” weekend...make sure you wear your green!

Volunteers are needed to help at the dance. If you would like to volunteer, please email your interest to ncaba@live.com.

Tickets can be purchased at NCABA member locations: Al’s Tire and Auto, Jeff Lantzy Insurance, and Rouse’s Flower & Garden Center, all of Northern Cambria; Goodfellas of Ebensburg and Hastings Bottling Works, Hastings.

A special thanks goes out to the members of Hope Fire Company for working with us in this endeavor.

Zerbee resigns as secretary

It is never easy to say good-bye and this time it is no exception. Donna Zerbee of AmeriServ Financial resigned as secretary for the NCABA. Donna has been the secretary since the NCABA’s induction back in 2003 (or earlier) when it was just a handful of people in the basement of AmeriServ without any plan, rhyme or reason….we just knew the NCABA was to be.

Donna jumped on board immediately to rally the group to move forward. Throughout the years she secured meeting rooms, organized events, took minutes, went to countless meetings regionally, stuffed envelopes and took hundreds of phone calls on our behalf.

Donna, you will be surely missed and it is about time, if not overdue, that we say “Thank You!” for everything you have done and for everything that we know you will continue to do.

Donna will still be an active member and will be co-chairing the 2008 Member-to-Member Expo. She will be spending her free time (if there is any) with her children and on committees for the activities that her children belong to. Enjoy your time Donna!

Veterans Ambulance plans to unveil expansion

Veterans Memorial Ambulance in Northern Cambria was established in 1968. Over the years Veterans has served as the community’s primary resource for response to medical emergencies. Veterans Ambulance provides 24/7 Advanced Life Support (ALS) Medical Care and responds to over 900 medical emergencies a year. The Ambulance Station located at 202 Juniper Street, Northern Cambria houses two ambulances in a 3-bay garage attached to small house. The house serves as both living quarters for the paramedics and EMT’S on duty as well as the main business office. For years the ambulance station has suffered many financial hardships and setbacks. Despite the setbacks, they have managed to improve the services to the community and the equipment utilized to properly treat the patients in need. Achieving this has been difficult but made possible due to the tremendous support of our community and the dedication of the staff of Veterans Memorial Ambulance. Public support and state/federal grants aided in the addition of the following equipment in the past two years, a brand new 12-lead cardiac monitor, Stryker Power Cot, 2007 Type III ambulance, and much more.

Directors of the ambulance are Barry Blake and James Smith, and the Board of Directors are Stanley Trybus (President), Gwen Magulick (Vice President), Dan Kline (Director), Tim Depetro (Director) and Frank Dumm (Director), are excited to announce near completion of the NEW ambulance station. The construction phase began in October and the project is expected to be completed in the next few weeks. The existing facility is a house which acquired by the ambulance station over 30 years ago and for many years has needed serious renovations. In the next couple of weeks it will be removed to reveal the new Headquarters.

An Open House will be held inviting the entire community to take a tour of the facility and to check out the equipment. The date is to be scheduled by the end of February or at the latest the middle of March, further information will be printed in the Star Courier and NCABA members will receive a notice via mail or e-mail.

Congratulations to this NCABA member! We are all looking forward to attending your open house! Thank you for submitting this story!

Alliance plans “Health & Wealth Gala” to benefit healthcare of community and Miners Medical

Everyone mark your calendars for Saturday, October 25th! The NCABA is co-organizing a fundraising event to benefit Miners Medical Center.

As we’re sure you all are aware, technology changes everyday. Many of you can probably still remember the day you took your present-day computer out of the box and thought how simple work would become...and it did. But now, you may be looking at that same computer system you have and wondering if you should upgrade. Maybe it still works, but something out there may be just a bit better and more efficient.

This holds true for any type of apparatus, be it auto parts, construction tools and even hospital equipment.

Miners Medical Center would like to update the heart monitoring system presently in use to enhance the high quality of treatment patients already receive at the facility.

Together, the Medical Center and the NCABA will be sponsoring a “Health and Wealth Gala”. Attendees who donate $25 will receive a chance to win $1,000 (based on the PA Daily Lottery Number), have several chances to win prizes of $100, be able to play professional casino-style games (for amusement only) and participate in raffles and other entertainment throughout the evening. Refreshments will be provided. All of this will take place at the Contres-Greer Social Hall in Northern Cambria (also an NCABA member)!

The NCABA is dedicated to the social and economic growth of our communities. The Miners Medical Center is our region’s only true local hospital. How wonderful it is to be able to help our neighbors stay close at home for treatment. We hope that in the near future, our local community will have all the latest equipment in the health care industry and this is a first step in the right direction.

Right now, the organizing committee is looking for our “Ace” sponsors - those who can donate $1,000 (this is limited to 4) to help cover the expenses. These sponsors will receive extensive recognition and advertising. We are also accepting gift baskets for the “basket raffle”. If any of you have connections with larger companies or representatives who might donate a large prize, please contact one of the committee members at the end of the article.

Tickets will be available soon. Please let us know how many tickets you would like.

This is a great networking event. Please bring your friends and colleagues.

The gala will have a different flair and give us all a chance to play professional casino-style games without the risk of losing any money. We’re sure you will be impressed with the professional service that will be providing the games.

For more information, please contact Diane O’Gorman or Sharon Traino at Miners Medical Center 247-3101, Jeff Lantzy at 948-8866, Tim Whited at 948-7880 or Fran Filkins at 244-1159. You may also e-mail the NCABA at the new email address, ncaba@live.com.

“Dax” makes an impressive show at meeting

The NCABA would like to extend a special thank you to Officer Dave Hassen and Canine Officer Dax for meeting with over 75 people of the community this past November. The NCABA sponsored a “Meet Dax” night at Cambrian Hills Country Club that was open to the public.

Dave and Dax educated the crowd on exactly what Dax can do and demonstrated several maneuvers for searching out illicit drugs and taking down a suspected criminal.

Dax was magnificently impressive. It was interesting to see so many people back away from him when he was demonstrating his missions for work—aggressively searching the room for “special” containers. Then, in the next moment he was being petted and mauled by the youngsters in the crowd.

He is a special animal to say the least and he and Officer Hassen make a very special team.

It was evident that Officer Hassen was the man for the job in handling Dax. The pair seemed natural and Dax listened to Officer Hassen’s every command. It may be quite possible that Dax will become not only “man’s” best friend, but the community’s best friend.

Pictured to the left is Officer Hassen commanding Dax to take down a suspect.

Event split into two: “Members-to-Members” Expo slated for May 8th; Career Fair to be held later

As the saying goes, “If first you don’t succeed, try-try again.” This year, we know it will be a charm! The Career and Economic Expo Committee met and made some revisions for 2008.

As you may recall, the Spring 2007 Expo had over 100 vendors but we had a disappointing turnout as far as attendees go. The committee checked with other “career fair” organizers in the region and they too were disappointed in the “job seekers” who came looking for employment.

Did we think too big? Were the times wrong? Did we pull the crowd from too many directions? It is probably safe to say the answer is a somewhat-yes to all the above.

Donna Zerbee and Barbara Kirby, co-chairs of the expo, did some research and came up with a plan to benefit everyone.

On Thursday, May 8th, there will be a “Members-To-Members” Expo at the Contres-Greer Social Hall from 4-8 p.m. What is great is EVERY NCABA MEMBER WILL GET A FREE SPACE! The doors will open from 4-6 p.m. and the community will be invited to attend to visit each vendor-member. It will be up to you if you want to offer a give-away or a door prize. Then, from 6-8 p.m. the doors will close and we will have an “After-Hours Mixer” with members and guests.

The event will still be heavily advertised and only members will have a chance to be a vendor. Non-members will be invited to join the NCABA if they would like to attend.

The time involved and financial investment is little but we feel the response will be great. This will be an opportunity to introduce a new product to the community or in some cases, to let the community know you exist and you are part of the group.

The space is free and already assigned to 2007 and 2008 members, but you must confirm/RSVP that you are attending (we don’t want to have empty spaces!).

Please contact Donna at 814-948-4021 or Barb at 814-948-8400 to RSVP or to learn more about sponsorship opportunities. You may also email the NCABA at ncaba@live.com and put “expo” in the subject line.

The Career Fair will also be held but again, with a different twist. The committee hopes to have several smaller career fairs dedicated to those specifically hiring who will specifically be advertised. This way attendees will seriously be interested in seeking employment and will know up front who is hiring.

Erin Gabany, Asera Care Hospice and Christina Shoemaker, Allegheny and Chesapeake P.T., will co-chair the career fair. David Volpt and Walter Asonevich of the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College have offered space at the Ebensburg location to hold the Career Fair.

For more information, please email the NCABA.

Above, “Night Train” performs at a local event this past summer. This is a must “dance to” band with a great following. The band performs classic rock songs that we all know and they provide an over-the-top performance. Only one request of Night Train...do not give up the mike to some of our “American Idol” members!

“Sheetz Family Christmas” a beautiful community outreach project

Pictured above, Jean Zemlock, stands in front of the windows at the Sheetz store in Northern Cambria. The windows are adorned with beautiful snowflakes purchased by customers to help raise money for The Sheetz Family Christmas program. For those of you who don’t know, according to the corporate website, the program was started in 1992 by the employees. It was designed to aid underprivileged children experience the holiday in the manner that so many other children enjoyed it. The first year, the employees raised $12,000 to take 126 children shopping for gifts.

This past holiday season, after 16 years, the program raised more than $350,000 and took more than 3,800 children shopping. The program benefits kids in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. Since 1992 the charity has raised $3.9 million and helped more than 29,000 children who are identified through the Salvation Army.

Sheetz is also an active participant in the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Special Olympics.

So next holiday season, grab a “cup of Joe” and a “flake of snow” at your local Sheetz store and be part of “the family” that helps families. Thank you to all the Sheetz employees for helping our communities!
