NCABA Minutes - February 16, 2005

The Northern Cambria Area Business Alliance met on Wed., February 16. The meeting was called to order by President Chuck Contres at 4:35 p.m.

Those in attendance: Chuck Contres (Long-Contres Funeral Home, Inc), John Fresh (Miners Medical Center), John Weaver (John’s Hardware and Tools), Craig Tretinik (Slovak Club), Barb Kirby (First National Bank), Fran Filkins (Healthsouth), Leah McAndrews and Pauline Formeck (Beverly Healthcare-Haida Manor), Jerry Tibbott and Bob Koban (Tri-County Transportation), Mary Baker (County National Bank), and Jeff Lantzy (Jeff Lantzy Insurance).

Minutes of the February 2, 2005 meeting were read and approved. Motion by Barbara Kirby and seconded by John Weaver.

Treasurer’s Report: $1,339.91 with no outstanding bills. We received a membership payment from Lou Monborne (Medvan).

The website is up and running. Members that are interested in developing a webpage should contact Lori Blake, the webmaster of our site. Lori will be working with Tim Whited (Al’s Tire) and John Rouse (Rouse’s Flower and Garden Center) on web development.

Committee Reports:

  • Marketing Committee – Jerry Brant (NORCAM), chairman, was not able to attend the meeting. Fran Filkins reported that there is slow progress on the regional marketing brochure. We are still in need of photos for the brochure. Miners Medical Center provided us with a photo. We still need to obtain photos of recreation, education and a local businessperson. Fran will be meeting with Mr. Mike Lauf of Miners Hospital to obtain a quote from him for the brochure.
  • Scholarship Committee – Tina Boland, chairman, was not able to attend the meeting. However, Tina did forward some collateral materials regarding the progress of establishing the scholarship. The scholarship committee is moving forward.
  • Fundraising/Activities Committee – Fran Filkins, Chairman reported that the membership committee and activities committee met together last Wed. The gentleman who could coordinate the Texas Hold’Em event did not attend as planned. The committee is looking into another set-up to hold the event. If it does not work out, they have a few other ideas to pursue for a fundraiser.
  • Membership Committee – Tim Whited, Chairman and John Rouse, Co-Chairman was not in attendance. Jeff Lantzy and Fran Filkins reported that the membership committee is making plans for a membership drive. The drive will include an ad in the Star-Courier and a door-to-door campaign for businesses. A rough draft of an ad was presented to the members present. The committee unanimously agreed to go ahead and place an ad in the local paper. Business memberships are now prorated at $50 for the remainder of the year. The new year will start July 1. Membership renewals will be $100 on July 1. Fran also reported that the Northern Cambria Vision Committee approved a membership to the NCABA and the $25 check should be forthcoming.

In other business:

Chuck Contres made a request that members attend a meeting for the LOCKE society. The LOCKE Society is pro-active in safe events for the community and children of the area. The meeting will be held Tuesday, February 22, 7 p.m. in the basement of the Coal Country Hangout. The purpose of the meeting is to organize a block party to be held during the town-wide yard sale and car show weekend. All members are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Chuck Contres discussed the NCABA offering a letter of support to Deacon Ann Staples and the Coal Country Hangout. Deacon Ann is researching the possibility of starting a skateboarding park in the area. The NCABA has agreed to send a letter supporting her research.

Two members will attend the Alliance for Business and Industry Meeting on Thursday, February 24, 8 a.m. at the 911 Building. Barbara Kirby and Fran Filkins will attend the meeting.

Alan Sponslor, Penn State University cooperative Extension Office will attend the next meeting at 8 a.m. at the Palace Hotel.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m.

The next scheduled meeting is Wed., March 2, 8 a.m. at the Palace Hotel. Due to a speaker being present, an RSVP is requested.
